k-12  schools

Efforts in K-12 schools have included partnerships with numerous school districts and organizations that support public and private K-12 education. One partnership with Pittsburgh Public Schools resulted in large-scale sustainability of the Simple Interactions approach through the Children’s Innovation Project and Teacher’s Innovation Project.

The adaptability of the Simple Interactions approach also extends to the connection among adults and children jointly engaged in technology-enhanced interactions within formal learning environments such as K-12 schools. The model can reflect adult-child interactions in the presence of technology, including the reciprocity and control of the interaction, the ways in which participation is encouraged, and the progression of challenge and the function of scaffolding for children as they work toward goals across domains of their development. Currently, we are exploring a Simple Interactions approach to adult-child interactions in the presence of technology. To test the model, identify technology-use exemplars, and provide opportunities for professional learning, the Fred Rogers Center has partnered with local school districts. We hope to adapt what we learn from districts rich in technology and those just beginning their journey with technology to support others in using technology well as a tool for interactions.
